Solid Fuel Merchants Ireland (SFMI) is proud to announce a new partnership with WillowWarm, a leading Irish innovator in biomass fuel production. This collaboration marks a significant step towards ensuring that rural homes can access affordable, low-emission heating options during Ireland’s energy transition.

The partnership will focus on distributing WillowWarm’s range of high-quality, kiln-dried wood briquettes and exploring further innovation in cleaner solid fuel technologies. These products offer lower emissions and higher energy efficiency, aligning with SFMI’s commitment to public health, environmental standards, and fuel security for off-grid communities.

Colin Ahern, Chair of SFMI, welcomed the partnership as “a vital step in showing how our sector is evolving.” He said:

“Thousands of homes across rural Ireland still rely on solid fuel heating, often with no viable alternative. This partnership with WillowWarm sends a clear signal that cleaner fuels are not only possible, they are already here. Our members are adapting and investing in solutions that align with Ireland’s climate goals while keeping vulnerable households warm and supported.”

WillowWarm has earned a strong reputation for producing 100% natural, sustainable briquettes made from Irish willow and timber residues. Their innovation aligns with the SFMI policy vision of “innovate, don’t eliminate” – supporting the solid fuel sector to transition, not disappear.

Donal Fanning, Director of Production & Operations at WillowWarm, said:

“We are delighted to partner with SFMI, whose members are the backbone of home-heating supply in rural Ireland. Together, we want to demonstrate that lower-emission, Irish-made solid fuels can play a responsible role in the country’s energy mix. We look forward to working closely with retailers, regulators and rural communities to deliver cleaner heat where it’s needed most.”

This announcement forms part of SFMI’s wider campaign to support fair regulation, drive out illegal fuel imports and promote a just energy transition that includes all regions and income levels.
